Turn on donations
Enable donations for your organization or ring, and what has to be in place first.
Turn on donations
Before you start
Donations need a charge-ready Stripe account. Until that's in place the Enable switch is greyed out and you'll see:
Connect a payout account first — Donations can be enabled once a charge-ready connected payout account is set up.
If that's where you are, start with Set up payouts with Stripe. "Charge-ready" means the Payments page shows Stripe connected with Charges: Enabled.
Who can do this
Only the organization Owner. Moderators can open the Donations page and see the form, but saving returns a permission error. For rings it's the ring Organizer.
Turn it on
- Go to Settings → Donations.
- Switch on Enable donations.
- Set a minimum donation — required, and it has to be more than zero.
- Optionally set a maximum, suggested amounts, and an appeal message.
- Click Save donation settings.
You'll see Donation settings saved. and a Donate button appears on your organization's page.
Nothing is live until you save. Flipping the switch alone doesn't do it.
After it's on
An overview appears at the top of the Donations page showing what you've raised — total, one-time versus recurring, active recurring donors, and a breakdown by ring if you have them. It only appears once donations are enabled, so the first time you visit, the setup form leads.
Doing this for a ring
Rings can have their own donations, but only if the organization allows it. Go to the ring's Settings → Donations. If you see:
Ring-run donations aren't enabled for this organization. An org admin can turn them on in the organization's ring-donation policy.
then the organization hasn't allowed it. See Ring donations: choosing a policy.
One difference worth knowing: a ring connects its own Stripe account, separate from the organization's. The "Set up payouts" button on a ring's donation page starts Stripe onboarding for that ring, not for the org.
Turning donations off
Switch off Enable donations and save. The Donate button disappears.
This does not cancel existing recurring donations. Monthly donors keep being charged. If you're winding down, you'll need to deal with those separately — and donors can always cancel their own from My donations.
