Minimums, maximums and suggested amounts

Three fields control what a donor sees on your donate form. All of them live under Settings → Donations.

Minimum donation

Required. It must be more than zero, and in practice no less than 50¢ — the server rejects anything below that even though the form won't warn you.

Set it low enough that a student can give and high enough that payment fees don't eat the gift. For most community groups $5 is a sensible floor.

If you don't set one, the default is $1.

Maximum donation

Optional. Leave it blank for no maximum, which is usually what you want — there's rarely a reason to stop someone giving more.

Suggested amounts

These become the quick-pick buttons on the donate form, shown lowest to highest. Three or four is the right number.

Pick them for your community, not from a template. If your members are students, 5 / 10 / 25 will raise more than 50 / 100 / 250. Setting amounts people can't afford mostly teaches them they can't support you.

You can add up to 10.

The rules that block a save

The form checks these in order and shows the first one it hits:

Message

What's wrong

Enter a minimum donation greater than zero.

Minimum is blank, not a number, or zero

The maximum must be at least the minimum.

Maximum is below the minimum, or isn't a valid number

Suggested amounts must be valid amounts greater than zero.

One of your tiers isn't a usable number

Each suggested amount must be within the minimum and maximum.

A tier falls outside your own range

Suggested amounts must be in increasing order.

A tier is equal to or lower than the one before it

Blank tier rows are ignored, so you don't need to tidy them up before saving.

Three things the form doesn't tell you

There's a 50¢ floor. The form only checks "greater than zero", so 0.25 passes validation and then fails on save with a server error. Keep everything at 50¢ or above.

The server re-sorts and de-duplicates your tiers. If you enter 25, 10, 25, 50 you'll get back 10, 25, 50. Not a bug — but it's why your saved order may not match what you typed.

Amounts are always in Canadian dollars. There's no currency setting.

Typing amounts

The form is forgiving. $25.50, 25,50 and 25.50 are all read the same way — dollar signs, commas and spaces are stripped.
