I can't sign in

Work through the usual causes in order — wrong sign-in method, forgotten password, unverified email, a deactivated account — and what to do about each.

Most sign-in trouble is one of a handful of things. Work down this list in order — the common ones are first.

You're using the wrong way in

This is the most common cause by a distance.

If you opened your account with Log in with Google, you may never have set a password. Typing your email and a guessed password will fail every time, because there's nothing to match.

Try Log in with Google instead. If that gets you in, you can add a password afterwards from Settings → Account.

It works the other way too: if you signed up with an email and password, but your Google account uses a different address, Google sign-in won't find your account.

You've forgotten your password

Choose Forgot username or password? on the sign-in screen. It handles a forgotten username as well.

There's a separate article in this section if the reset email doesn't turn up.

You're using a different email address

Accounts are tied to one address. If you have a work address and a personal one, the account is on whichever you used at sign-up.

Not sure which? Search both mailboxes for mail from Gathrings — your original welcome message will tell you which one it went to.

Your email isn't verified yet

If you see "Verify your email to continue", your account exists but is waiting on one step. Open the link in the verification email, then come back and choose I've verified.

No email? Use Resend email on that screen. It goes to the address on the account, so check spam there.

Your account was never activated

If you get in and see "Your account is not yet activated. Would you like to activate it?", choose Activate. You'll get a confirmation — "Your account is now activated! Welcome to Gathrings" — and carry on.

The other button on that dialog is Sign out, which leaves you exactly where you started. Choose Activate.

You deactivated your account

Sign in the normal way. You'll be asked:

Your account was deactivated on [date]. Would you like to reactivate it?

Choose Reactivate and everything comes back as you left it — your rings, your events, your messages. Nothing was deleted while it was off.

Again, the other option is Sign out, which leaves the account deactivated.

You asked us to delete your account

If you started a deletion, signing in shows you when it's scheduled and gives you a Cancel Deletion button. Take it and your account carries on normally.

If the deletion has already gone through, the account is gone and can't be recovered. You'd need to start a new one.

The app is out of date

If sign-in worked before and stopped, update the app from the App Store or Google Play — or on TestFlight, check for a newer build. Sign-in is one of the areas we change most, and an old build can be left behind.

If updating isn't possible right now, the website works in your phone's browser and uses the same account.

None of the above

Write to [email protected] and include:

  • the email address on the account
  • how you're trying to sign in — password or Google
  • what you see, word for word, including any error
  • phone or computer, and which browser or app

That last line is the one people leave out, and it's usually the one that tells us what's wrong.
