Using chat
Find your conversations, reply to and react to messages, edit or delete what you sent, and understand Sent and Read.
Chat lives under Messages. The icon in the navigation shows when something's unread.
Finding a conversation
Conversations are listed newest first, with a badge showing unread counts.
Three filters sit at the top:
- All — everything
- Direct — one-to-one chats with your connections
- Organizers — threads with the people running a ring or event
Once you've got more than a handful, Organizers is the useful one. It separates "where do I park" from the people you actually met.
Who you can message
Two groups:
- Your connections — people you matched with after an event
- Organizers — of a ring or event you belong to or are attending
There's no general search-and-message. If someone isn't in one of those groups, there's no way to reach them, and no way for a stranger to reach you.
Writing a message
Type in the box at the bottom and choose Send. The emoji button is next to it.
If something goes wrong you'll see Failed — tap to retry on the message. Tap it. Nothing was lost — it just didn't leave your phone, usually because the signal dropped.
Scrolling to the top of a long conversation gives you Load older messages.
Replying to a particular message
Choose Reply on a message and your response is attached to it, quoted above what you write. Useful when a conversation has moved on and you're answering something from further back.
Tap the quote to jump to the original. If it says Original message unavailable, the message you replied to has since been deleted.
Reactions
Add a reaction puts an emoji on a message without sending one of your own. Reactions show as a chip under the message with a count, so several people can add the same one.
It's the easiest way to say "got it" without making someone's phone buzz again.
Editing and deleting
Your own messages have Edit and Delete under message actions.
An edited message is marked edited — the change isn't hidden from the other person.
Deleting asks you to confirm, and is clear about what it does:
This message will be removed for everyone in the conversation.
Afterwards, This message was deleted sits in its place. Deleting takes the content back, not the fact that you sent something.
Sent and Read
Under your messages you'll see Sent, then Read once the other person has opened it. In a conversation with several people it's Read by [name].
This is tied to the Read receipts setting in Settings → Preferences, and it works both ways. Turn it off and you won't see when people read your messages, and they won't see when you read theirs. You can't keep one direction and give up the other.
Keeping chat history
Chat survives a lot. Disconnecting from someone keeps the conversation. So does their account being closed — their messages stay in the thread, just no longer shown as theirs.
