Go to Settings → Notifications. Every kind of notification has its own row, with two switches: In-App and Email.

They're independent. Turn both on for things you can't miss, In-App only for things you'll see when you next open Gathrings, both off for things you don't care about.

Membership

Notification

When it fires

Join request received

Someone asks to join a ring you organize

Join request approved

You're let in somewhere you asked to join

Join request declined

You're not

Invitation received

Someone invites you to a ring or an event

New member joined

Someone new joins a ring you organize

The first and last are organizer notifications. If you don't run anything, they'll never fire.

Events

Notification

When it fires

New event published

A ring you follow puts something on the calendar

Event details changed

Time, date or place moved

Event canceled

It's off

Event reminder

Shortly before an event you're going to

Event details changed and Event canceled are the two worth keeping on email. They're the ones where finding out late means standing outside a locked door.

RSVPs and comments

Notification

When it fires

RSVP confirmed

Your own RSVP went through

RSVP received (host)

Someone RSVPs to your event

Comment on your event

Someone comments on an event you're hosting

RSVP received can be noisy on a popular event. In-App only is a reasonable setting — you'll see the count when you look, without a message per person.

Connect

Notification

When it fires

Reminder to pick people after an event

A nudge to say who you'd like to see again

New mutual connection

You and someone else both said yes, and a chat is open

The reminder is time-sensitive — it's the prompt to act while you still remember who you met. If you want Connect to work, keep it on.

Getting the balance right

A rough starting point:

  • Email and In-App — cancellations, changes, invitations, new connections
  • In-App only — RSVPs to your events, comments, new members
  • Off — anything you've never once acted on

If you're being buzzed too often, turn off email first and keep In-App. You lose nothing — the notification is still waiting under the bell when you open the app.

Where notifications turn up

The bell in the top bar shows what's unread. Mark all as read clears the badge, and View all notifications opens the full history, which goes back further than the dropdown shows.

Newsletter

The Gathrings newsletter is separate from all of this, and lives in Settings → Preferences under Newsletter. Turning every notification off won't unsubscribe you, and unsubscribing won't stop notifications about your own events.
