Join an organization or a ring

Open, request to join, and invite-only — what each means, how to track a pending request, and how to leave.

You join a ring to take part. Joining one makes you a member of its organization too, so start with the ring that interests you rather than the organization above it.

The three ways in

What you see depends on how it's been set up.

Open — a Join button. You're in straight away.

Request to join — a Request to Join button. An organizer reviews it. The button then reads Pending Approval until someone decides.

Invite only — no button. You need a link or an invitation from a member. There's no way to request your way in, so ask someone you know in the community.

Rings use Open or Approval required. Organizations have all three.

While you're waiting

A pending request shows as Pending Approval, and Cancel Request withdraws it.

Approvals are done by volunteers, usually in the evening — give it a day or two before chasing. You'll get a notification when it's decided, if Join request approved is on in Settings → Notifications.

Worth making your profile presentable first. A photo and a line about yourself are often all an organizer has to go on.

An invite link lets you see a ring and join it even if it's private. Choose Join this group, signing in first if you need to.

If the link doesn't work, you'll see which of these it is:

Message

What it means

Invite not found

Invalid or removed — ask for a fresh one

Invite revoked

An organizer turned it off

Invite expired

Past its expiry date

Invite full

The link hit its limit on uses

Group unavailable

The ring is no longer there

In every case the fix is the same: ask an organizer for a new link.

Private organizations and rings

Private ones are hidden from search and discovery — only members and people with an invite can find them. If someone has mentioned a community you can't find, it's probably private, and the way in is to ask them directly.

Leaving

Leave organization on the organization page, or leave a ring from the ring itself.

You will no longer be a member of [name]. You can rejoin by joining one of its rings.

Nothing is deleted. Comments and photos you've added stay where they are, and you can come back later.

One restriction:

You cannot leave as the sole owner. Transfer ownership first.

If you're the only owner of an organization, make someone else an owner before you go. Otherwise the organization would be left with nobody able to run it.
